The International Society for Functional Linguistics (SILF) aims at bringing together the linguists and researchers that apply the principles of functional linguistics to the study of langages. Its mission is to coordinate the research and to spread the results obtained by functionalists hailing from all countries and belonging to all trends, by publishing a journal, by initiating study meetings and by organising yearly colloquiums whose proceedings are then published thanks to the collaboration of the host universities.

The journal LA LINGUISTIQUE (Paris, Presses Universitaires de France), founded in 1965, has been the official organ of SILF since 1977. It is nowadays the oldest linguistics journal published in France. Functionalism inspired, it is open to debating ideas and confronting points of view, whether they be in the domain of epistemology or in that of the description and explanation of langage facts.
